2/3/09
All three network news shows had Oval Office interviews with the President. He called the anchors in to talk about the stimulus package, but, of course, everybody wanted to know his reaction to the departures of Tom Daschle and Nancy Killefer. He told all three he blamed no one but himself for the drop out distractions, but he pointed out to all three that the controversies over line items in his package were over one per cent of the total bill. Didn't know that. It shows how the Republicans have controlled the debate over the past weeks.
Maybe I missed it, but has any show done a good breakdown of where Obama wants to spend the money? And who added the Hollywood subsidy? And the stop smoking aids? Can’t the Dems get over themselves?
Katie’s and Charlie’s questions were civil and pointed. No fawning. NBC and Brian actually let the President talk (gasp). Longest sound bite I've heard for a long time. Nicely edited.
Lots of reporting on the down economy. Free breakfasts at Denys. Hundreds showing up for a handful of firefighters’ jobs in Miami.
Singletons: Missing ex-FBI agent kidnapped in Iran. NBC says a diplomatic initiative might come out of a prisoner swap. CBS had the news that the Peanut Corporation of America dry roasted a rat and roaches along with the goober peas. They found the rat. Brian Ross did a piece on medevac helicopters that advanced the story. Hospitals are doing something called “‘copter shopping” now that there a lot of for-profit companies with aerial ambulances. They keep calling until they find someone who will fly. Another medical warning: Dr. LaPook on CBS said a CT scan for heart testing can deliver radiation equivalent to 600 chest X-rays. He said the tests can be made safer if people pay attention. But he didn’t say how.
NBC had their Buddy Holly tribute. CBS had a kicker about Philippe Petit who ran a cable between the World Trade Center towers and wire-walked from one to the other some 35 years ago. It wasn’t an anniversary or anything. Like the joke about the flagpole sitter: I could not see the point.

As long as I was breathing with the contractions and not pushing against them, I felt better. That idea is fundamental-to feel pain and not to resist; to go towards it. It is an incredibly spiritual practice.

If I had my way, if I was lucky enough, if I could be on the brink my entire life - that great sense of expectation and excitement without the disappointment - that would be the perfect state.
